Grace Darling was born Nov. 20th 1893
in NYC of Scottish American descent.
She is 5ft. six and half inches tall, she has blond
hair, dark blue eyes and weighs 129 pounds.
Miss Darling made an unusual screen debut
for she first appeared in a cross country tour
for Hearst’s weekly, as most of her fans will
remember, a sort of seeing America First trip.
She also played in “The Perils of Pauline
for Pathe’ and in “Our Mutual” for the Mutual.
Her more recent hit was scored in “Beatrice Fairfax.
produced for the International Film Service, by
the Wharton Brothers.
She had no stage experience, making he debut
directly into pictures, and though primarily
selected for her photographic qualities, she
has given good account of herself in heavy
dramatic work.
She is fond of country life she enjoys golfing,
swimming, dancing, not to mention automobiling.
While in Ithaca she drove around with Irene
Castle in her own vehicle (a Darling) which
she also drove in the Beatrice series.
Irene and Grace were also excellent swimmers
and divers and enjoyed themselves right outside
the studio during breaks in filming.
They often went horseback riding together on
their days off, Grace stayed at 116 Kelvin Place
in a Cornell Heights home sublet by Leo
Wharton and his wife Bessie just around
the corner from Irene.
A scene from the Beatrice Fairfax series was
filmed on the porch of the house. Olive Thomas,
Nigel Barrie and Bessie Wharton
are seen in this picture which appeared in the
10th episode entitled Play Ball.
In her motion picture work Grace Darling is in
constant demand because of her pleasing
personality, her good looks and her natural
ability. “the finest compliment ever paid me,”
she declares,” was when Beatrice Fairfax
selected me to impersonate her in the great
film play, Beatrice Fairfax.
It was a generous, big hearted thing to do,
and is just another exemplification of her
splendid character. "My greatest ambition
is to live up to the high ideals this wonderful
woman has set, and to think that I share
even the slightest degree the affection in
which she is held by millions."
Darling was a former writer herself at Hearst/Selig
she has traveled all over the world, has met
celebrities in every land and has had enough
thrilling experiences to make a 50-episode
“movie” serial.
Because of her ability as a writer she was
selected to make a trip on the first steamer
that went from New York to San Francisco,
through the Panama Canal.
Grace Darling made six or seven feature
films after the Beatrice series in 1916.
She died on October 7th 1963.
