DUTCH" SCHMIDT
BREAKS INTO MOVIES
*********
Well Known Cornell Entertainer
Has Part in New Wharton Serial
**********
A new comet rose at Wharton Studios yesterday,
when C.W. Schmidt, the Cornell amateur theatrical
star, burst upon the screen in the opening scenes
of a new photo-play production that will later reach
a waiting world under the title "The Black Stork."
Mr. Schmidt, under the happy nickname of
"Dutch" is popularly known as the college comic,
but recently, Howard Estabrook cast him for a
serious role in "Intrigue," at the Studio-Varsity
Show, and Mr. Schmidt scored so decisively
that he was immediately offered a part in the
forthcoming Wharton production.
Yesterday he began his work at the studios,
and Mr. Estabrook paused in his labors of
exterminating the Black Order of the
"Mysteries of Myra." long enough to instruct
Mr. Schmidt in the mysteries of movie "makeup".
In resplendent evening clothes, Mr. Schmidt
began his career as a young club man, and as
the clicking of the camera bothered him not
at all and he accomplished everything exactly
as desired, the Wharton directors enthusiastically
declared his debut a great success.
It is probable, as Mr. Schmidt has another year
at Cornell, that he will be seen in future
Wharton productions, "unless E.G. hollers,"
Mr. Schmidt remarked, "E.G." being the
young man's father. Mr. Schmidt is
president of the Savage Club and
of the Cornell Masque.
